Brava! for Women in the Arts was created and founded by Ellen Gavin. BRAVA’s initial participants included several feminists, activists and artists in San Francisco. Some of these participants included Cherrie Moraga, Amy Meuller, Jewelle Gomez and Ellen Sebastian Chang who continued their journey as artists, activists and community leaders in San Francisco during the inception of Brava! for Women in the Arts.
n 1996, after ten years in the Mission District, BRAVA purchased the abandoned York Theater, a 70‑year-old former vaudeville house on the vibrant 24th Street Corridor in the heart of the barrio. Following a $3 million renovation, the BTC now houses two performance spaces—a 371-seat main theater and a 100 seat Studio Theater. A second phase of renovation to be completed in 2008 will result in the creation of the new Cabaret Off-Brava as well as new and improved green rooms and dressing rooms. Since BRAVA was created in 1986, its founder/artistic director Ellen Gavin produced dozens of award winning World and West Coast Premieres,
San Francisco youth and provides them with hands-on technical training in theater production.
