SAN FRANCISCO SPCA

The mission of The San Francisco SPCA is to save and protect animals, to provide care and treatment, to advocate for their welfare and to enhance the human-animal bond.

Founded in 1868, The SF/SPCA is a community-supported nonprofit dedicated to saving, protecting and caring for cats and dogs.

We do this through immediate care of animals that are homeless, ill or in need of an advocate, but we also work to educate the community, reduce the number of unwanted kittens and puppies through spaying/neutering, and improve the quality of life for animals and their companions.

Simply put: The SF/SPCA cares. We care for the abused or abandoned dog, for feral cats fending for themselves, and for animals in pain and requiring treatment. The care that we and our community of supporters provide makes the difference between neglect and nurturing, hurting and health, loneliness and a loving home.

As an independent nonprofit that receives no federal, state or local funding or from national organizations (including the ASPCA), we rely solely on donations from our supporters to provide our many services, such as:

  • The new Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center, which includes our Primary Care Veterinary Hospital, Spay/Neuter Clinic, Feral Cat Assistance Program, Foster Care Program, and Shelter Medicine Department.
  • Maddie's Pet Adoption Center
  • Humane Education
  • Public Dog Training Classes
  • Animal Assisted Therapy

Instead of contacting us about strays (including injured ones), call our partner, the San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control.

If you find an animal:

  • Take the animal to the San Francisco Department of Animal Care and Control located at 1200 15th Street (at Harrison), San Francisco, CA 94103. This shelter is the central location for lost/found animals in San Francisco. If you are interested in adopting an animal that is not reclaimed, you can place a CIP (Call Interested Party) hold on the animal.
  • If you are unable to transport the animal or if the animal is sick or injured, call Animal Care & Control and an officer can provide assistance. 415.554.6364
