HISTORY: Founded in San Francisco in 1852, Wells Fargo is the oldest and largest financial services company headquartered in California. Wells Fargo’s building was destroyed in the earthquake and fire, but cashier Frederick Lipman telegraphed: “Building Destroyed, Vault Intact, our position unimpaired” and bank president I.W. Hellman vowed to help rebuild the city bigger and better than ever. Today San Francisco houses the Wells Fargo History Museum which contains historical exhibits including the California gold rush and an authentic stagecoach.

Wells Fargo’s financial education program, Hands on Banking®/El futuro en tus manos®, provides children, teens and adults with free, comprehensive money-management skills. San Francisco team members teach the curriculum to individuals and small businesses in partnership with non-profits and schools and they also participate in workshops held by local chapters of Junior Achievement.
